FT Silfies Consolidates MD Operations
Nazareth, PA – FT Silfies, a regional mid Atlantic carrier of dry bulk aggregate materials has announced that is has consolidated its Maryland operations to run out of Aberdeen, Md.
“The economic conditions that have been affecting trucking companies across America are not discriminatory to large trucking companies, as I believe every company that operates a single truck is being affected,” stated Randy Sheeler, the company’s President & CEO. Sheeler added, “With unstable fuel prices averaging over $1.80/gallon higher this same week a year ago, carriers must do everything they can to reduce fixed costs. We have done everything we know how to do to maximize mpg in our tractors to include monthly driver bonuses to gain mpg performance while reducing speeds to conserve fuel. While it’s slowly working, national fuel price guideline are often released monthly so we’re always about four weeks behind in our savings projections.”
“Operating three separate facilities in Maryland is a “nice to have” in our industry, however, it was important for us to reduce overhead and operate leaner to stretch every dollar. We are in no way, shape or form leaving the Maryland market place, however we have spent significant dollars in technology that is allowing us to test our virtual trucking theory by electronically sending orders to the tractor that allows the driver to receive their dispatch instructions, perform the required function and electronically scan the paperwork from a remote location. It’s nothing we haven’t done in the past and it’s been tested multiple times and has proven to work very well. As a driver, they spend most of their time in the tractor and on the road and have little contact with terminal personnel. When they do, it’s usually at the end of the day and during dispatch hours. Drivers, customers and vendors will now have one terminal to deal with,” added Sheeler.
Einar Markussen, Regional Operations Director for the MD facilities adds, “We want to be a one stop shop and feel we can put more resources together through this consolidation. We have the technology in the form of in-cab mobile communication units that have prepared us to launch into a world of virtual trucking and we certainly have the right people on board.”
